On June 18th 2012, Dr. Andrew McCallum, Chief Coroner for Ontario, released the Cycling Death Review. The purpose of the review was to examine the circumstances of cycling deaths that occurred from Jan. 1, 2006 to Dec. 31, 2010.
The Chief Coroner for Ontario recommends that the Ministry of Transportation and the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing consider a Complete Streets approach as the first step towards creating safer streets.
According to the report, “a complete streets approach should be adopted to guide the redevelopment of existing communities and the creation of new communities throughout Ontario. Such an approach would require that any (re-)development give consideration to enhancing safety for all road users” (Office of the Chief Coroner of Ontario, 2012).
