Between 2016 and 2019, the Ville de Repentigny moved forward with the redevelopment of Notre-Dame Street between the intersections with Notre-Dame-des-Champs Boulevard and D’Iberville Street.

Between 2016 and 2019, the Ville de Repentigny moved forward with the redevelopment of Notre-Dame Street between the intersections with Notre-Dame-des-Champs Boulevard and D’Iberville Street. The project’s aim is to speed up bus travel by creating a reserved lane and thus improve the flow of movement for 1400 daily public transit users. This road section is identified in the Plan d’urbanisme de Repentigny – 2015 as a key sector for creating an east-west axis for the local cycling path network, and also for completing a section of the Route verte, as described in the Plan du Réseau vélo métropolitain. In addition to being one of the city’s main metropolitan and local public transit thoroughfares, this stretch of road borders Place Repentigny, a regionally important commercial hub.
Pedestrian infrastructure
In addition to the existing sidewalk on the south side of the roadway, a multi-use path bordered by a vegetative strip will be added on the north side. Paving stone will be installed to indicate pedestrian crossings at the intersection of Notre-Dame-des-Champs Boulevard and Notre-Dame Street.
Universal accessibility
Curb ramps are to be installed at all intersections. The multi-use path is also intended to create a barrier-free path for persons with reduced mobility.
Cycling infrastructure
The main improvement is the installation of a multi-use path linking the Repentigny cycling network with the Route verte. This will address the issues and meet the objectives identified in the city’s Plan directeur de transport, whose aims include the development of active transportation.
Public transit
The redevelopment will include the addition of a reserved lane for public transit which will reduce travel times between Repentigny and Montréal. This portion of the project has been designed in partnership with EXO, the public agency that oversees suburban bus and train travel.
Landscaping and furniture
The preservation of mature trees currently represents a development challenge, but these trees will add to the quality of the site’s landscape. The addition of a raised median with trees and planter boxes will help green the neighbourhood. The inclusion of evergreens, deciduous trees and grasses on either side of the multi-use trail will reduce the effect of heat islands.
Challenge encountered: phasing of the work
The traffic volume of 20,000 vehicles per day does not allow the worksite to be fully closed for redevelopment. Thus, the work will be carried out in different phases in order to maintain the flow of movement on this key Repentigny artery. An important communication strategy has been developed, specifically to inform the population of which detour routes to use.
